covering creatives in the district of columbia

In October 2009 Nicole Aguirre and I began Worn Magazine, a print publication and blog that intends to bring greater awareness of local fashion and art to the District and to the nation. It is our view that lives embellished with art and style are the best lived, and the magazine exists to encourage the flourishing of both in the DC community.

The launch of Worn meant I needed to attend as many openings, artists talks and exhibitions as possible; know what major institutions such as the Phillips and Hirshhorn were up to; learn to screen print at Pyramid Atlantic; travel to hidden collections such as the Kreeger Museum; visit artists in their studios; and photograph all of these experiences. Without any formal education in the arts, my training began at places like Irvine Contemporary, the Fridge, the National Gallery of Art but mostly through hundreds of conversations with artists, collectors, curators and gallery owners.

A contortionist wearing a giant inflatable latex fruit basket made by Katie Balloons, who was being filmed for a reality show on the TLC channel, is just one example of the images I came across.
